Final expense,
quietly in place.

A small permanent policy that pays quickly, sized to the funeral and the bills that follow it — so the people you leave behind are grieving, not fundraising.

What it actually is
§ 01Definition

Whole life, small face amount, simple underwriting.

It is a permanent whole life policy — level premium, coverage that does not expire — written at a face amount measured in thousands rather than hundreds of thousands. Most carriers issue it on health questions and a prescription check alone, with no exam and no blood draw, which is why it stays available to people larger policies have already turned down.

The beneficiary is named on the policy, so the money goes directly to them, outside probate, usually within days of the claim — at exactly the point when a funeral home wants payment up front.

§ 02How it runs

How it gets issued

Health questions decide which tier you land in, and the tier decides both the premium and whether the full benefit is payable from day one.

01

The health questions

A short application by phone or at your kitchen table. If you are 65 or over and we meet at your home, California requires me to send you a written notice at least 24 hours before that visit — I always do. No exam, no blood work — but answer honestly; a misstatement is what gets a claim contested inside the first two years.

02

Level benefit

The best tier: the full death benefit payable from the first day the policy is in force, at the lowest premium available to you.

03

Graded or modified

Recent health events can mean a partial benefit or return of premium during a waiting period, with the full amount after. Accidental death is typically covered in full throughout.

04

Guaranteed issue

No health questions at all, with a waiting period before the full benefit applies. The last resort, not the starting point — I check the other tiers first.

Fit · and the trade
§ 03Judgment
This fits you if
  • You are roughly 50 to 85 and want a modest amount in place permanently.
  • Your term policy has ended or is about to, and renewing it is priced out of reach.
  • Health history makes fully underwritten coverage difficult or expensive.
  • You do not want your children deciding what they can afford to spend on your service.
What you have to weigh
  • Cost per thousand of coverage is higher than a fully underwritten policy — you are paying for easy issue.
  • Graded and guaranteed-issue tiers limit the benefit during the waiting period.
  • If you are healthy and insurable, a standard whole life or term policy will almost always give you more coverage per dollar. I will quote both.
  • It is not a substitute for income replacement if people still depend on your paycheck.
